What is the Glory of God?

Home > Pastor's Blog > What is the Glory of God?

On Wednesday Night, November 4th, we will be trying to define “the Glory of God.” I recently attended a seminar on church revitalization. The guest speaker made a statement concerning churches in decline. He said “all things were created to glorify God.. is there anything about a dying church that brings glory to God?” Then he spent some time talking about the glory of God.

As he continued to speak I was reminded that “the Glory of God” has become a popular slogan in the church – particularly in some of the more “Calvinist” denominations. The Westminster Shorter Catechism begins with the Question: “What is the chief end of man?” Answer. “Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.” One popular “Reformed” pastor uses the “Glory” term regularly, but when he was asked to define it on his blog – he admitted it is “very difficult to define.”

Baptists sing many songs about the Glory of God. (“To God Be the Glory” and “Glory to His Name” and “Glory to God Forever” and “Glorify Thy Name in All the Earth.”) The Bible teaches (Rom 3:23) that it is a sin to “fall short of the glory of God.” While we are ascribing Glory to God – we also call the American Flag “Old Glory” and sing “Glory, Glory, to Ole Georgia” on Fall Football afternoons. Are we talking about the same kind of glory?

As we prepare for Wednesday Night, let’s “Glorify God” by first figuring our what we mean by the term and then ask ourselves:
