Tithes & Offerings

Home > Pastor's Blog > Tithes & Offerings

On Wednesday Night, Feb 1st, we will continue our January Bible Study from the Book of Malachi. In the fifth session of our study, the topic concerns “Tithes and Offerings.” The text that we will be studying is Malachi 3:6-12.  This text features that famous verse about tithing: “Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me! But you say, ‘In what way have we robbed You?’  In tithes and offerings.”  The “Tithe” is giving 10% of your income to the Lord. An “Offering” is any gift to the Lord above the “Tithe.”

These verses have become controversial in the modern Church because Malachi is a book from the Old Testament. Some Christians claim that the Church is nolonger under the Old Testament, we are under the New Testament – we are not under Law, we are under Grace – therefore, we are not under any obligation to tithe. Other Christians claim that since the whole Bible is inspired, we are still required to tithe.
