The Ways People Pray

Home > Pastor's Blog > The Ways People Pray

On Wednesday Night, August 23rd , we will continue our prayer study. For the background to our study, we are using “The Doctrine of Prayer” by T. W. Hunt. In chapter 4, he discusses our methods of prayer.  Is there a “right” or “wrong” way to pray? The only “wrong” way to pray according to Jesus in Matthew 6:7 is “when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.”  Prayer is communication with God and God expects our communication to be “in spirit and truth” or in sincerity and without pretense (John 4:24).

Throughout church history, Christians have used a variety of ways to pray. Many prayers are brief and spontaneous prayers offered when we have a need or when someone asks us to pray for them about a need. But during our daily devotions or quiet time, our time in prayer may take on a longer form. Some Christians are more liturgical using prayer books like “the Book of Common Prayer.” Some Christians use some form of a prayer guide to keep them focused during their prayer time. Some Christians pray extemporaneous prayers – simply praying about whatever comes to their mind.

Our question for the evening is:  During your Daily Prayer Time,

"How do you pray?"
