The Spoken “Blessing”

Home > Pastor's Blog > The Spoken “Blessing”

On Wednesday Night, May 8th, we will be discussing “Blessing.”  Since Sunday is Mothers Day, it seems like a appropriate topic because our mothers are such a blessing to us. Mothers are the way that the Lord has chosen to give His special “Blessing” of Life to us. Beyond our birth, our mothers also team up with our fathers to bless us with food, clothing, shelter, healthcare, education, transportation, and other essentials to help us grow up and become adults.

Several years ago, Christian counselors Gary Smalley and John Trent wrote a book called “The Blessing.”  In this book, they emphasized that we need more than these “essentials” to grow up and become psychologically and spiritually mature. We need to be Blessed. Smalley & Trent say that we all need to be blessed with a 5 part spoken blessing that includes a meaningful touch, a spoken message, an attachment of “High Value”, a vision of a special future, and an active commitment. These counselors tell us that this kind of blessing is necessary in order for children to feel love, approval, and acceptance.

What do you think?  Is all this mystical “spoken blessing” necessary? Most of us were taught that “actions speak louder than words.”  In the Bible – in the Book of James,  James seems to question the value of words, especially if they are not joined with actions. James  2:15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food,  16 and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit?

So, as we gather on Wednesday Night, thinking about Mothers Day, and our childhood, and our own parenting methods – Is it important to verbally “Bless” our children and grandchildren?
