The Genealogy of Jesus ?

Home > Pastor's Blog > The Genealogy of Jesus ?

On Wednesday Night, December 14th, we will be studying the Genealogy of Jesus. Since we are once again in the Christmas season, it is not unusual for Christians to read the Bible stories concerning the birth of Jesus. As you are reading in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, you may notice that both Gospels present us with a genealogy or family tree of Jesus. If you study these genealogies you may notice that there appears to be a discrepancy or contradiction between the two.

In Matthew 1:6, David begot Solomon and there is a long line of descendents to Jacob who “begot Joseph the husband of Mary of whom was born Jesus who is called the Christ.”

In Luk 3:31, David begot Nathan and there is a long line of descendents to “Joseph, the son of Heli.”

So, was Joseph the son of Jacob or the son of Heli?
