The Apostle’s Creed

Home > Pastor's Blog > The Apostle’s Creed

On Wednesday Night, Oct 23rd , we will be answering a question about The Apostles Creed. Many Christian denominations recite The Apostle’s Creed as part of their worship. The Apostle’s creed is one of the earliest statements of belief by the church, dating back to the 4th Century AD.

“I believe in God the Father, Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth: And in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary: Suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, dead and buried: He descended into hell: The third day he rose again from the dead: He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty: From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead: I believe in the Holy Ghost: I believe in the holy catholic church: the communion of saints: The forgiveness of sins: The resurrection of the body: And the life everlasting. Amen.”

Baptists have generally been a non-creedal people. It is not that we necessarily disagree with the contents of the various creeds of Christendom. To quote one of our SBC Presidents and Theologians, Dr Hershel Hobbs: “Baptists have always shied away  from anything that resembled a creed or statement of beliefs to which their people were forced to subscribe.” But even though we Baptists don’t recite the Apostle’s Creed, millions of Christians down through the centuries have quoted this creed as their basic understanding of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

The question we have been asked to discuss concerns the phrase in the middle: “He descended into hell.”  What is this all about? Where is this found in the Bible? Is this found in the Bible?  So, the question for the evening is:

Did Jesus descend into Hell?
