Suicide Prevention

On Wednesday Night, June 2nd, at 6:30pm, we will have a study on Suicide. I remember reading the New York Times headlines in April 2016 that said “‘U.S. Suicide Rate Surges to a 30-Year High’… Suicide for the last several decades has been on the increase… According to the CDC, Suicide was the 7th leading cause of death for males and the 16th leading cause of death for females. Suicide is the 2nd  leading cause for those ages 15–24.” And those suicide stats continue to grow.

More suicides were suspected to happen as a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic with all the sheltering in place, lockdowns, social distancing, and job losses. However, according to the Journal of the American Medical Association, suicides were actually down in 2020 to 44,834 which was 2,677 less than 2019. Still it was sad to read the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report by the CDC from August 2020 that found 25.5% of youth aged 18-24, 30.7% of caregivers for adults and 21.7% of “essential workers” had seriously considered suicide during the height of the COVID pandemic.

For the past year, there have been lots of things that could cause depression and move people toward despair. So, we’ve been asked to study the following:

If a Christian commits Suicide, will he or she go to Heaven?

  • Yes (73%, 67 Votes)
  • No (14%, 13 Votes)
  • Undecided (13%, 12 Votes)

Total Voters: 92
