Spiritual Discernment

Home > Pastor's Blog > Spiritual Discernment

Our Wednesday night topic for April 3rd will be a discussion of Spiritual Discernment. One of our members recently sent me a sermon preached by a popular preacher in the metro Atlanta area. The preacher delivered the message with skill, sincerity, and passion. But the problem with the message is that he wrongly “divided the word of truth” (2 Tim 2:15). But the fact that he was preaching error did not seem to bother the congregation at all. They were laughing at his humor, saying “Amen”, and applauding his points.

In our culture, we are constantly being bombarded with messages from sermons we hear, music we hear, movies we watch, articles we read – that often, if we are not careful, we judge messages by the personality of the messenger or the style of the message instead of carefully discerning the content of the message.

Throughout the Bible, believers are warned against false teachers and false teaching. In 1 Corinthians 12, we are encouraged to pray for the spiritual gift of discernment which means having the ability to understand the difference between truth and falsehood. Hebrews 4:12 tells us that the key to this spiritual discernment is having a good working knowledge of the Word of God. In Acts 17:10-11, the believers at Berea are commended for their discernment because they “received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.”

Wednesday Night, we will watch and listen to this video message, and see if we can discern truth from error. To prepare your heart for this session, please answer the following question – Are you a Berean?  Do you daily study the Scriptures so you will know whether the messages you hear are true or not ?
