“Single Issue Politics”

Home > Pastor's Blog > “Single Issue Politics”

Since Sunday, Jan 15th is Sanctity of Life Sunday and since we are in a presidential election year, I thought Wednesday night, Jan 11, would be a good night to discuss “Single-Issue Politics.”

A certain popular talk show host out of Atlanta regularly rants against pro-life Christians. Since the Democratic party has clearly made abortion rights (or “pro-choice”) part of their party platform, most pro-life Christians have migrated to the Republican party. This Atlanta talk show host wishes they would leave the Republican party and go somewhere else – because he believes that pro-life Christians give Republicans “unelectable” candidates to run against the Democrats.

Example – this talk show host said a few weeks ago- “Bachmann.. and Santorum have ZERO chance of winning the election, and here’s why … 42% of Democrats will vote for the Democrat no matter what, and 38% of Republicans will vote for the Republican no matter what. The battle is for those that vote independent. And there’s no way a big pro-life or pro-christian… candidate is going to make a person who voted for [Pres] Obama now vote for a Republican, it ain’t going to happen.”

He is NOT the only political pundit to claim that pro-life Christians who choose candidates based on a single issue (abortion) are killing the Republican party. Many of the “talking heads” we listen to in the news recommend a BROADER approach where in addition to a candidates position on abortion that we also look at their position on foreign policy, the economy, healthcare, size of government, taxation, education, law enforcement, etc.

As Christians who will be dealing with all these issues at the polls in about 10 months,

What kind of voter are you?

  • Single Issue Voter (Pro-Life Christian) (35%, 6 Votes)
  • UnDecided (0%, 0 Votes)
