Should Christians try to Convert Jews?

Home > Pastor's Blog > Should Christians try to Convert Jews?

On Wednesday Night, November 16th, we will have a discussion about Judaism. One of our members recently met a new friend who happens to be Jewish. They can easily talk about almost everything in life – except religion. Our member asked me about how a Christian can share their faith with a Jew without offending them. Christians are taught from the New Testament – Acts 4:12 “there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved…[than the name of Jesus Christ].”  However, Jews do not see Jesus as their Messiah – so there is an immediate conflict.

To further complicate matters – last December, the Roman Catholic Church released a document from the Pope called  “The Gifts and Calling of God are Irrevocable,” which concluded that “Jews don’t need to be converted (to Christ) to find salvation… the Church does not question the continued love of God for the chosen people of Israel…. Judaism is not to be considered simply as another religion… the Jews are instead our ‘elder brothers’,  our ‘fathers in faith’… Jesus was a Jew… His first disciples gathered around him had the same heritage.”

So, are Jewish people in a special category because they are “God’s Chosen People” and everybody else must come to Jesus for salvation?  Or must Jewish people accept Jesus as their Messiah also? What do you believe?
