Should Christians recite the Lord’s Prayer?
Home > Pastor's Blog > Should Christians recite the Lord’s Prayer? On Wednesday Night, May 28th, we will try to answer the question – Should Christians recite the Lord’s Prayer? In Luke 11: 1 Now it came to pass, as [Jesus] was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.” 2 So He said to them, “When you pray, say: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. 3 Give us day by day our daily bread. 4 And forgive us our sins, For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one…”
Since Jesus said “when you pray, say…” many Christian denominations regularly recite the Lord’s prayer as a part of their worship. However, other Christian denominations say that the “Lord’s Prayer” was given to us as a model prayer or an outline on how to pray and that we should not repeat the prayer word for word, over and over – because Jesus said in Matthew 6: 7 And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do.”
So, our question for the evening is – to recite or not to recite – what do you think?
