Should Christians be Preppers?

Home > Pastor's Blog > Should Christians be Preppers?

On Wednesday Night, March 24th, at 6:30pm, we will try to answer the question ” Should Christians be Preppers?” It is difficult to pinpoint what started people to “prepping.”  But all across America, thousands of people are stocking up on food, water, medical supplies, weapons, ammo, gold, and silver. Some are going even further in their “preps” and digging bunkers. Maybe it was the Terrorist Attacks on 9-11. Maybe it was superstorms or natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina. Maybe it was the Stock Market crash of 2008. Maybe it was the Coronavirus Pandemic. Maybe it is the nearly $30 trillion national debt. Maybe it is the “gridlock” in Washington. Whatever the cause, there seems to be a sense of foreboding among some people that something terrible is soon to happen.

What should a Christian do in times like these?  Some Christians say we need to prepare for hard times. They quote Solomon in Pro 6:6 “Go to the ant, you sluggard! Consider her ways and be wise, 7 Which, having no captain, overseer or ruler, 8 provides her supplies in the summer, And gathers her food in the harvest.”  Other Christians say there’s no need to prep, you should simply have faith. They quote Jesus in Mat 6:19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy  and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal…. 25 Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on…. 26 Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?….. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things.”
