“Sexual Abuse and the SBC”

Home > Pastor's Blog > “Sexual Abuse and the SBC”

On Wednesday Night, Feb 27th, we will discuss “Sexual Abuse and the SBC.”  Beginning on February 10, 2019, the Houston Chronicle began a 3 part series called “Abuse of Faith” documenting how over the last 20 years there have been around 380 Southern Baptist Church leaders and volunteers who have been accused of sexual misconduct against more than 700 victims. The offenders include Pastors, Youth Ministers, Music Ministers, Sunday School Teachers, Deacons, and Church Volunteers. From those accusations, there are around 220 offenders who have been convicted, took plea deals, or whose cases are still pending.  Other offending ministry leaders are still serving in SBC churches today.

Beyond the offenses at these churches, the victims blame several past presidents and prominent leaders of the Southern Baptist Convention for ignoring or downplaying these incidents of abuse. Interestingly, the list of prominent leaders of the SBC included the names of leaders who were involved in the “conservative resurgence” within the SBC.

Now, because of the articles in the Houston Chronicle, the pressure is on the current SBC president, Dr. J. D. Greear, to fix this problem.  As we prepare for this discussion, please answer the following question:

Can the Leaders of the Southern Baptist Convention fix an abuse situation in a local Baptist Church?

  • No (82%, 18 Votes)
  • Unsure (14%, 3 Votes)
  • Yes (5%, 1 Votes)

Total Voters: 22
