Second Baptism of the Holy Spirit

Home > Pastor's Blog > Second Baptism of the Holy Spirit

Our question for this Wednesday Night Bible Study deals with the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. There are Bible stories in the Book of Acts of people who believe in Christ and then at a later date are baptized by the Holy Spirit and then they speak in “tongues”. (See Acts 19 for example.)

Several Christian groups interpret these references in Scripture to mean that when a person is saved, they receive an initial filling of the Holy Spirit. This initial filling is enough for them to be saved or “born again” but not enough to receive the “fullness” of the Spirit. After this first experience at conversion, the believer should seek, pray for, and strive for a “Second Blessing” or a “Second Baptism of the Holy Spirit.”  The proof or evidence that you have received the Second Blessing or Second Baptism is the spiritual gift of “Speaking in Tongues.”  Further, if you have never spoken in Tongues, then you have not received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Since this is taught in the Bible, why do most Baptist churches NOT teach and practice this Second Baptism of the Holy Spirit?
