National Day of Prayer (& Fasting?)

Home > Pastor's Blog > National Day of Prayer (& Fasting?)

On Wednesday Night May 2nd, 2012 – we will have a special time of prayer for our nation. Thursday, May 3rd is the National Day of Prayer. In 1952, President Harry Truman signed a bill formally calling for the nation to have a National Day of Prayer each year with the proclamation, date and time being decided by the President of the United States. In 1988, the law was amended to set the date for the National Day of Prayer to be the the 1st Thursday in May.

Prior to 1988 and 1952, various Presidents all the way back to George Washington have called for National times of prayer. Many of those earlier presidents called for “a day of public humiliation, fasting, and prayer.” Since our forefathers linked prayer and fasting, and since I recently received a question about fasting, I thought it would be terrific time to discuss “fasting” as part of our observance of the 2012 National Day of Prayer. There are numerous examples of fasting in the Old Testament. But in the New Testament, Christians aren’t required to observe many of the rules and rituals from the Old Testament.
