Labor Day

Home > Pastor's Blog > Labor Day

On Wednesday Night, Sep 9th ,  we will discuss the Labor Day Holiday. According to the US Department of Labor,  “Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country….   It is appropriate, therefore, that the nation pay tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation’s strength, freedom, and leadership — the American worker. ”  And while most Americans enjoy the Labor Day Holiday with BBQ, Parades, and Political Speeches – most American’s do not enjoy their job or having to labor or having to work. Also, if you study the history of the Labor Day Holiday you will find that the holiday came into being as a result of endless strife between management and labor unions. Managers try to get workers to work for as little money as possible. Labor unions try to get managers to pay their workers as much as possible. Many workers that you encounter during the average week are clearly not enjoying their job and there is somewhere else that they had rather be than working.

As we enjoy our Labor Day Holiday, let’s think about our attitude toward work. How is a Christian supposed to view work?  Is it our calling or vocation? Or -is it a necessary evil because we have to “pay the bills”? I’ve heard people refer to work as “the Curse” – the punishment for Original Sin which is described in Genesis 3: 17-19 “Cursed is the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat of it All the days of your life. Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, And you shall eat the herb of the field.  In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread Till you return to the ground… ”
