How to Study the Bible

Home > Pastor's Blog > How to Study the Bible

On Wednesday Night, July 8th, at 6:30 pm, we will have a Bible Study about Bible Study.  I have recently been asked to share my Bible Study methods. How do I prepare Sermons? How long does it take to prepare a Sermon?

I believe it is important to begin your Bible Study with a prayerful attitude asking the Lord to illuminate the Scriptures that He has already inspired. For example, pray Psalm 119: 18 “Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law” or Psalm 19:14 “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my Strength and my Redeemer.” As I begin to read the Scriptures, I ask the following questions: What does it Say (Translation)?  What does it Mean (Interpretation)? and So What (Application)?  Now that I have read this Scripture and understand what it means – what is this Word from the Lord specifically saying to me and to my family and to the church?

As you begin to ask and answer these questions, you will find that this method of Bible Study takes time.  So our Wednesday Night Question for the Week is:

How much time to you spend each week in Bible Study?

  • 1-5 Hours (54%, 22 Votes)
  • 0-1 Hours (27%, 11 Votes)
  • 5-10 Hours (17%, 7 Votes)
  • More than 10 Hours (2%, 1 Votes)

Total Voters: 41
