Hospital Visitation

Home > Pastor's Blog > Hospital Visitation

On Wednesday Night, October 8th, we will discuss “Hospital Visitation.” As a pastor, I often hear “I know I need to visit people in the hospital – but I don’t know what to say or do.”  The visitation of the Sick & Elderly is becoming a lost art – especially among the generations born since 1960. Before 1960, there was no TV – so people were more likely to visit for entertainment!  Also since 1960, the general attitude of most Americans seems to be that “Life is a Party – we’re supposed to have Fun and avoid Pain and Suffering – Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy!”

But pain & suffering happens. Many people only visit the hospital if it is a close relative – some not even then. According to the Bible, Christians should be a compassionate people who visit and pray for the sick. In Church history (17th Century), “the Sisters of Charity” was an order of Nuns started by St Vincent de Paul who were known for their compassion and care. Their motto was “when you leave a patient to go to pray, you go from God to God.” Their motto seems pretty radical until you read the words from Jesus in Mat 25:31-40.

Jesus said “I was sick and you visited me.” Jesus apparently expects Christians to visit the sick and elderly.
