On Wednesday Night, January 8th, we will be discussing “Horrific Bible Stories.” As we enter the New Year, we always encourage our members to set a goal of reading through the Bible.

During this past year – One of our members was trying to read through the Bible in one year and asked the following question “Why are there so many horrific stories in the Bible?”

The first story outside of Eden is the murder of Abel by his brother Cain. Some of the patriarchs had multiple wives and all the drama that goes with that. There are stories of lying, cheating, and deception. Noah, the only father considered righteous enough to escape the great flood, got drunk and cursed one of his sons. Abraham, the father of the faithful, told lies and had a son by a woman who was not his wife. Jacob, father of the Israelites, stole his brothers birthright. Moses, the great lawgiver in the Old Testament, was guilty of murder. David, the man after God’s own heart, committed adultery and used lies and murder to cover it up. Solomon was reported to be the wisest man who ever lived, yet he had 700 wives and 1000 concubines. The warfare reported in the Bible was brutal and barbaric.

What is the point? What are we supposed to learn from these Horrific Bible stories ?
