Faithfulness

Home > Pastor's Blog > Faithfulness

On Wednesday Night, Jan 18th, we will continue our January Bible Study from the Book of Malachi. In the third session of our study, the topic concerns “Covenant Faithfulness.” The Bible describes a person’s relationship with God as a covenant or an agreement. The Bible is divided into 2 covenants: the Old Covenant (or Testament) and the New Testament. The Old Covenant between God and Israel was made at Mt Sinai and was described in Exodus 19. The Lord promised to bless Israel as follows: “if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine. 6 And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.”  The Leaders of Israel heard the Covenant and responded as follows: “All that the LORD has spoken we will do.”  Each year, each generation renewed the covenant.

By the time of Malachi’s generation, many people were breaking the covenant. Malachi was sent to warn the priests that God’s Blessing was tied to their faithfulness to the covenant. If they expected God’s blessing to continue, their faithfulness needed to continue. But the Priests were being unfaithful in their duties and were allowing the worship of other gods. Also, the People were being Unfaithful to their spouses and were divorcing in order to marry unbelievers.

As we prepare for our discussion, what do you think is the current status of faithfulness in our nation today. Are we faithful in keeping our promises? In Malachi 2, the prophet really focuses on marital unfaithfulness that leads to divorce.
