Climate Change

On Wednesday Night, November 2nd, we will discuss Manmade Climate Change. As Americans go to the polls to elect a President on November 8th,  this issue of Manmade Climate Change is one of the areas where the two major parties have major differences.  The Democrats see Manmade Climate Change as a clear and present danger to our nation and to the planet.  The Republicans see Manmade Climate Change as long on politics and short on science.

From the Democratic National Platform 2016- “Democrats believe that climate change poses a real and urgent threat to our economy, our national security, and our children’s health and futures.”

From the Republican National Platform 2016 – “Information concerning a changing climate, especially projections into the long-range future, must be based on dispassionate analysis of hard data…. The United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is a political mechanism, not an unbiased scientific institution.”

The argument from both sides is passionate.

In a recent article on National Public Radio titled “Should We Be Having Kids In The Age Of Climate Change?”, Travis Rieder, Professor of Philosophy at the Berman Institute of Bioethics at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore was lecturing college students at James Madison University about NOT having children. He told the students that in 20 years,  future generations will be living amid the climate devastation being created now… so “maybe we should protect our kids by not having them.” Later in the article, Professor Rieder explains how he and his wife wanted to have a large family, but because of global climate change they are only having one child.

On the other side, “climate change deniers” cite the “Climategate” controversy from 2009. Just before the Climate Summit in Copenhagen, there was a release of hacked emails from the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia (in the UK) which gave the impression that the climate scientists were manipulating climate data to prove that climate change was a real problem.

Wednesday Night, we will look at Climate Change from a Scientific, Political, and Biblical point of view. But to prepare for our study, please answer the following question:

Do you believe that the earth is in danger because of manmade climate change?

  • No (83%, 15 Votes)
  • Yes (11%, 2 Votes)
