Christian Self-Defense ?

Home > Pastor's Blog > Christian Self-Defense ?

On Wednesday Night, February 3rd, at 6:30pm we will study Christian Self-Defense. I received a question from an online viewer who is concerned about what appears to be a growing anti-Christian sentiment in our country. In the early days of our country, the USA was considered to be a “Christians Nation.”  In the last few decades, things have shifted and some of our government leaders are viewing some Christians as possible “Domestic Terrorists.”

For example- on January 23rd, Tulsi Gabbard, a former Democratic US Representative from Hawaii and former Democratic candidate for POTUS in 2020, in an interview with Fox News Primetime (with host Brian Kilmeade) expressed concern that a proposed law to combat “domestic terrorism” could be used to undermine civil liberties. The Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act of 2021 (text not available yet) was introduced in the House on January 19th.  Rep. Gabbard said her concern lies in how officials will define the characteristics they are searching for in [identifying potential Domestic Terrorists]. She said “When you have people like former CIA Director John Brennan openly talking about how he’s spoken with or heard from appointees and nominees in the Biden administration who are already starting to look across our country for these types of movements similar to the insurgencies they’ve seen overseas, that in his words, he says make up this unholy alliance of religious extremists, racists, bigots, he lists a few others and at the end, even libertarians.” Rep. Gabbard said, “What characteristics are we looking for as we are building this profile of a potential extremist, what are we talking about? Religious extremists, are we talking about Christians, evangelical Christians, what is a religious extremist? Is it somebody who is pro-life? Where do you take this?” Gabbard said the proposed legislation could create “a very dangerous undermining of our civil liberties, our freedoms in our Constitution, and a targeting of almost half of the country.”

Not only is Tulsi Gabbard concerned, many Christians are concerned as well. Several of our members and online viewers have asked what Christians are supposed to do if the government begins viewing Christians as “Domestic Terrorists” or “Enemies of the State.”   Romans 13:1 says “Let every soul be subject to the [government].” Do Christians have a right to self-defense? Are Christians allowed to defend themselves and their families?

And that will be our Wednesday Night Question of the Evening:

Do Christians have the Right to Self-Defense?

  • Yes (93%, 64 Votes)
  • No (4%, 3 Votes)
  • Undecided (3%, 2 Votes)

Total Voters: 69
