Catholic Concerns?

Home > Pastor's Blog > Catholic Concerns?

Our Wednesday night topic for March 20th will be a discussion of Roman Catholicism.

On March 13, 2013, a white puff of smoke from the Sistine Chapel announced that the Roman Catholic Church had just elected their new pope named Jorge Mario Bergoglio. His official name and title will be called Pope Francis. According to Wikipedia, the Roman Catholic Church is the world’s largest Christian church, with 1.2 billion members. The church is also one of the oldest Christian churches and beginning with Pope Francis, they connect themselves back thru 266 Popes to the Apostle Peter.

Many Protestant church leaders, Baptists included, seem to be excited about Pope Francis because he has a history of ministering among the poor and being pro-life, pro-marriage, and pro-family.

Recently, one of our members came to me and was very concerned about a close family member joining the Catholic Church. If the Catholic Church is not only a Christian denomination – but the oldest and largest Christian denomination, what is there to be concerned about? This will be our discussion question for the evening.

Should Baptists be concerned about friends who join the Catholic Church?
