Basic Bible Teaching 2

Home > Pastor's Blog > Basic Bible Teaching 2

Last week, we introduced “Discovery Bible Study.”   I learned about this at a Chattahoochee Baptist Association’s Key Leader Training last year.  The session leader was Joe Hernandez – a church planter with the North American Mission Board.  He told the story of  IMB missionary David Watson.

David Watson had been sent to an area of Northern India known as “the graveyard of missions.”   Hardly any mission group had been successful in starting churches in that area.  David set aside the traditional mission methods he had been taught  and built a strategy around John 6:44-45.   In verse 44, he realized salvation is from God, so he began praying and asking God to do a great work in Northern India.  In verse 45,  he realized that God can teach people Himself without the direct assistance of missionaries –  which was a good thing since missionaries were forbidden to work in that area.

David found 5 local volunteers who showed some interest in Christianity and began to teach them how to READ the Word, UNDERSTAND the Word, and OBEY the Word.   They began to pray and study and start churches. In the first year, they started 8 churches – in the second year, they started 48 more churches – in the third year, they started 500 churches – and 20 years later, there are around 85,000 churches in Northern India with approximately 6.5 million Christians.

As we discussed last Wednesday night – whether you are church planting in Northern India or teaching a Bible class in North Georgia,  this Discovery Bible Study is a terrific method of learning and sharing the truths of Gods Word.

For Wednesday, July 13th – let’s study Genesis 22:1-18.
