The New World Religion: Environmentalism

On Wednesday Night, October 27th, at 6:30pm, we will study “Climate Change.”  From October 31st to November 12th, the United Nations Annual Climate Conference will convene in Glasgow, Scotland. The importance of this conference is stated at the “ukcop26.org” website:  “Climate change is the greatest risk facing us all….  Around the world storms, floods and wildfires are intensifying. Air pollution sadly affects the health of tens of millions of people and unpredictable weather causes untold damage to homes and livelihoods too.”  In order to tackle this existential threat to planet Earth, the United Nation is challenging all the nations of the world to achieve 3 Goals:

1. Achieve Net Zero [or Zero pollution] by 2050 which means accelerate the phase-out of coal, curtail deforestation, speed up the switch to electric vehicles, and encourage investment in renewable energy.

2. Protect communities and natural habitats.  The climate is already changing and it will continue to change even as we reduce emissions with   devastating effects. The UN encourages countries…to protect and restore ecosystems, build defenses… and resilient infrastructure and agriculture to avoid loss of homes, livelihoods and even lives.

3. Mobilize finance – To deliver on our first two goals, developed countries must make good on their promise to mobilize at least $100Bn in climate finance per year by 2020.  International financial institutions must play their part and  work towards unleashing the trillions in private and public sector finance required to secure global net zero.

4. Work together to deliver ..[us from the] climate crisis.
