On Wednesday Night, September 29th, at 6:30pm, we will study “Idolatry.” In Webster’s Dictionary there are 2 primary meanings. First, an idol is  “an object of extreme devotion”. Second, an idol is a “representation or symbol of an object of worship.”

The first definition of an idol is related to the Oxford Dictionary definition that says an idol is a “person or thing that is greatly admired, loved, or revered.”  An example of this is the TV program called “American Idol” that has run for almost 20 years. It is a reality show that features a competition or talent search to see who will be the next big entertainment star. This show became very popular with tens of millions of viewers and voters for who will be the next American Idol.  Wikipedia reports on the size of this “idolatry” with the following statement: “The dominance of American Idol in the ratings has made it the most profitable show in U.S. TV for many years. The show was estimated to generate $900 million for the year 2004 through sales of TV ads, albums, merchandise and concert tickets…. One estimate puts the total TV revenue for the first eight seasons of American at $6.4 billion.”

The second definition is closer to the Biblical idea of an idol. An idol is any representation of an object of worship which competes with the God who created us as the center of our life. Is there anyone or anything that we admire, love, revere, or worship more than our “our great God and Savior Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:13) ?
