The Trinity

Home > Pastor's Blog > The Trinity

On Wednesday Night, May 12th, we will study The Trinity. The first hymn in our hymnbook that we often sing says “Holy, Holy, Holy – merciful and mighty – God in three Persons – blessed Trinity.”  And while we sing it, we have trouble understanding it. How can God be 3 and yet 1 at the same time? Maybe that explains why so many people in the world have chosen to accept the 1 and forget the 3. The Jews quote Deut 6:4 “The LORD our God, the LORD is one!”  Several other denominations and religions accept the 1 and forget the 3 – Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mormons, Muslims, Unitarians, and Oneness Pentecostals. Someone has said that while most Christians claim to be Trinitarian – we live as practical Unitarians rarely mentioning the Trinity in our sermons and Sunday School lessons. And though Christians are supposed to believe in the Trinity, even our theologians are hard pressed to try to explain how God can be 3 and 1 at the same time. Augustine has been quoted as saying “If you deny the Trinity you lose your soul, if your try to explain the Trinity you shall lose your mind.”  Indeed, the Doctrine of the Trinity is mind boggling.

Our question for the evening will be:

Is Belief in the Trinity essential to Salvation?

  • Yes (82%, 80 Votes)
  • No (12%, 12 Votes)
  • Undecided (6%, 6 Votes)
