Good Friday

Home > Pastor's Blog > Good Friday

On Wednesday Night, March 31st, at 6:30pm, we will try to answer the question – Did Jesus Die on Good Friday?  In Matthew 12:40, Jesus said “for as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” If Jesus died on Friday afternoon and rose again on the “third day” you only get 2 nights and part of 3 days. Is this a contradiction?

The Traditional view says it’s no contradiction. “Three days and three nights” was a Jewish idiom or figure of speech for any part of 3 days. But there are several Bible scholars who argue for a Wednesday or a Thursday crucifixion in order to fulfil Mat 12:40. A couple of notable examples are Anglican Theologian, E. W. Bullinger, who makes a strong Biblical case for a Wednesday Crucifixion and Evangelist R.A. Torrey, former Pastor of Moody Church in Chicago, who offers a Wednesday or Thursday Crucifixion.

Since this week is observed by Christians around the world as “Holy Week”, this week is a good week to re-read the Gospels and familiarize ourselves with the final days of Jesus Christ on this earth before His crucifixion and resurrection.
