On Wednesday Night, December 2nd, at 6:30pm we will study the issue of Biblical Parenting. One of the most controversial verses in the Bible concerning parenting is Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.”  This verse seems to give parents a guarantee that if they raise their children with Bible teaching, prayer, church attendance, etc, then their children will grow up to be good and godly Christians. But then many parents struggle with doubts when their children grow up and turn away from the faith. This is not just a rare occurrence. The Christian apologetics website, Crossexamined.org reports that 70-75% of Christian youth leave the church after high school. That statistic would indicate that over 70% of youth are departing from the training that their Christian parents tried their best to give them.

Dr. Sid Buzzell who wrote the comments on Proverbs in “The Bible Knowledge Commentary” from Dallas Theological Seminary says “a proverb is a literary device whereby a general truth is brought to bear on a specific situation. Many of the proverbs are not absolute guarantees for they express truths that are necessarily conditioned by prevailing circumstances.”  In other words, Proverbs 22:6 is generally true but the truth may be “conditioned” by how well the parent trained or by how well the child responded to the training or both.             What do you think?
