On Wednesday Night, Oct 2nd, we will have a discussion about Women in Ministry. This topic has been controversial in the church especially since the feminist movement of the 1960s. In the last 60 years, women have risen to positions of leadership and prominence in all areas of society. Currently, there are five women who are candidates for President of the United States in 2020. This is another example of how the culture and customs of Biblical times makes the Bible seem irrelevant to our 21st century culture.

Beyond the culture, the Apostle Paul’s writings on the subject seem contradictory. In 1 Timothy 2:12, Paul did “not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man but to be in silence.” In 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1, Paul instructs these early church planters to select only men to be pastors and deacons. But then Paul writes in other places about how in the early Church women allowed their homes to be used as the gathering place for the church. He lists at least 16 women who he compliments as “fellow workers… fellow soldiers… fellow prisoners” in the Gospel of Christ. He writes in 1 Corinthians about women who taught and prayed and prophesied in these early churches.
