Should a Christian get a Tattoo?

Home > Pastor's Blog > Should a Christian get a Tattoo?

On Wednesday Night, July 10th, we will discuss Tattoos. Forty Years ago tattoos were considered taboo. Occasionally you would see a soldier or a sailor or a biker with a tattoo. If you went to the circus, you would see tattoos. But the majority of people did not have tattoos.

The trend toward tattoos has changed in the last couple of decades. Now, tattoos seem to be everywhere. Athletes, actors, musicians, celebrities, even clergy have all kinds of art on their bodies. Around 1 in 5 Americans (20%) have tattoos. There are several popular TV shows dedicated to tattooing.

So there is no doubt that tattooing has become a very popular. But our question of the evening is: Should Christians get tattooed?  There is only one verse in the Bible that seems to address the subject. Leviticus 19:28 “You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor tattoo any marks on you: I am the LORD.” Some Christians interpret this to mean that since it is forbidden in the Bible, then Christians should not do it. Other Christians say that Christians in the New Testament era of grace are no longer bound by the Old Testament Law. For example, Leviticus 11:7 also forbids eating pork.

So, please prayerfully and carefully consider this subject as we prepare to discuss the Wednesday Night Question of the Evening:
