Should Christians Keep the Ten Commandments?

Home > Pastor's Blog > Should Christians Keep the Ten Commandments?

On Wednesday Night, October 24th, we will try to answer the question – Should Christians keep “The Ten Commandments”? In a recently published book by a popular megachurch pastor in the Atlanta area, he says “The Ten Commandments have no authority over you. None. To be Clear: Thou shalt not obey the Ten Commandments.”

This seems to run counter to what many Christians have been taught. Americans have been living in a culture where “The 10 Commandments” are displayed in various court buildings in our Nation from local courts to the US Supreme Court. There have been various court battles between Christians who want the commandments displayed and Non-Christians who want to remove them from public places. Some Christians believe that keeping the Ten Commandments is essential to the Christian Life. Other Christians say that believers in Jesus Christ have been “freed from the law” and that believers are not under Law but under Grace.

In both the Old Testament (Lev 18:5) and in the New Testament (Gal 3:12), we read “it is through obeying the law that a person has life” (NLT). But the Bible also says that Christians are “free from the law” (Rom 8:2). Some Christians believe that they are so “free” in Christ that they no longer read the Old Testament because they think it is irrelevant to them since the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.  What do you think?
