Psalm 83 – Prophecy or History ?

Home > Pastor's Blog > Psalm 83 – Prophecy or History ?

On Wednesday Night, June 20th, we will study the 83rd Psalm. In recent times, many of the popular prophecy preachers, teachers, writers, and TV personalities have concluded that since Psalm 83 has not been literally fulfilled in the past, then the “confederacy” of nations that are listed in the Psalm must be referring to the Muslim nations surrounding Israel today. Psalm 83 lists 10 nations which surrounded Israel in Old Testament times – whose names have changed over time – but whose territory is now occupied by predominately Muslim populations. Psalm 83:4-5 says these nations have conspired together to “cut [Israel] off from being a nation, that the name of Israel may be remembered no more.”  These prophecy preachers say these verses are being fulfilled in the present time and sometime in the future (at the Return of Christ) these nations will be “put to shame… that they may know that You, whose name alone is the LORD, are the Most High over all the earth (v 17-18).”

However, many Bible scholars from “mainline” Christian denominations and seminaries, say that Psalm 83 is not prophetic at all. They claim that these verses are historical and were fulfilled centuries ago in Old Testament times.
