On Wednesday Night, August 2^nd, we will be studying a new trend that is designed to make our lives more convenient. In our fast paced world it has become such a hassle to try to keep up with keys, codes, passwords, and credit cards to get to work, to enter the building, to log on to our computer, and to buy coffee and a snack at breaktime.

Last week, NBC News reported on a technology company in Wisconsin called “Three Square Market” who has solved the hassle for it’s employees. Three Square is introducing a microchip (about the size of a grain of rice) that will be implanted under the skin of it’s employees between the thumb and forefinger. With a wave of their hand, the employees will be able to “open [secure] doors, log into their computers, operate copy machines, or pay for snacks out of the company’s vending machines.”  The plan begins implementation on August 1^st when the CEO and 50 of his employees will get chipped. The company makes it clear that the microchip cannot be hacked and will not be used for tracking the movement of employees. If any of the employees decides later that they want the chip removed, the company says removal of the device is similar to removing a splinter.

While many people are enthusiastic about the convenience that this microchip technology provides, NBC reported that some people are concerned about privacy and “fundamentalist religious groups” call the chips “the Mark of the Beast.”
