Do Christians really need the Christmas Story?

Home > Pastor's Blog > Do Christians really need the Christmas Story?

On Wednesday Night  (the Wednesday Night before Christmas), we will be discussing the importance of Christmas or, as theologians call it, “The Incarnation.” Is the Birth of Christ important in our understanding of the Work of Christ?

Recently, someone sent me a video clip of a sermon by one of our local popular mega-church pastors who introduced his sermon with the following monologue.  “Who Needs Christmas, right?… One of the challenging things about the Christmas Story is the Christmas Story !… there’s so much miraculous, so much amazing, so much that’s unbelieveable… a lot of people don’t believe [the Christmas Story] and I understand that… If somebody can predict their own death and then their own resurrection, I’m not all that concerned about how they got into the world… Christianity doesn’t hinge on the truth or even the stories around the Birth of Jesus.”

Should we (as this pastor suggests) skip over the Birth, the Life, the Teachings of Jesus and focus our attention on the Cross and Resurrection?

Is the Christmas Story important?
