Knowing God

Home > Pastor's Blog > Knowing God

On Wednesday Night, September 28th, we will discuss our knowledge of God (aka Theology!) For some people, this is a very important subject. For others, it may take some time for theology to become an important subject. But as Mark Twain said in his own sarcastic way “man is a religious animal.” I assume he was referring to the fact that sooner or later, it dawns on people that there must be something or someone bigger than themselves in this universe. Seventeenth century thinker Blaise Pascal wrote about this and it has been paraphrased as people having a “God Sized Hole” in their being that we often try to fill with other things – but we will not be satisfied until we fill ourselves with God. Who is this God? What is God like?  How may we get to know this God?

Christian Theologians study the Bible to discover how God has revealed Himself to us. They refer to what can be known of God as “Attributes.” The list of attributes may vary between theologians, but the list usually includes – God is: Self-Existent, Eternal, Omnipotent, Omniscient, Omnipresent, Sovereign, Transcendent, Immanent, Immutable, Righteous, Just, Holy, Loving, Merciful, Gracious, and True. What do these words mean?

Wednesday night we will talk about these words and hopefully get to know God a little better. To prepare for this study, what does “omniscience” mean ?

Omniscience means:

  • All Knowing (89%, 17 Votes)
  • Ever Present (11%, 2 Votes)
  • Scientific (0%, 0 Votes)
  • All Powerful (0%, 0 Votes)
