Should Christians Gamble?

Home > Pastor's Blog > Should Christians Gamble?

On Wednesday Night, Feb 17th, we will be discussing “Gambling.” I recently received an email from Rev Mike Griffin who is the Public Affairs Representative for the Georgia Baptist Mission Board. His email reads as follows:

“The Georgia Senate Committee passed out (2) bills legalizing pari-mutuel betting on Horse Racing. One was a constitutional amendment for the voters to approve and one for the enabling legislation. This bill now rests in the Rules Committee and is waiting for a vote to send it to the floor of the Senate!   I am writing you today to ask you to contact your state Senator… and thank him for his service to your community. Also, ask him to vote NO to the expansion of gambling in our state. If Horse Racing is passed it WILL eventually lead to full blown casinos and off-track betting sites in our state. If it is not stopped now, we have lost an opportunity we will never get back!”

Obviously Brother Griffin sees a problem with Gambling. However, I hear from church members from time to time who ask “what is the problem with a friendly wager on a horse race or a football game or scratching the occasional lottery ticket?  After all, there is no explicit Commandment that says ‘Thou Shalt Not Gamble.’ ”

What do you think?
