The Name of the Lord

Home > Pastor's Blog > The Name of the Lord

On Wednesday Night, Feb 3rd, we will be studying “The Name of the Lord.” The Name of the Lord is very important. The basic meaning of prayer means to “call on the Name of the Lord.” Praying is essential to our salvation. Rom 10:13 says that “whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”   But what is the Lord’s Name?

Historically in America, we have called the name of the Lord “Jehovah.” Jehovah first appears in the King James Version of the Bible in Exodus 6:3 “I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them.” If you are reading other versions like NKJV, NIV, NASB, ESV, they will use the term “LORD” in all capitals – some with footnotes that say “Hebrew is YHWH, pronounced Yahweh or Jehovah.”  The Holman Christian Study Bible which is produced by the Southern Baptist Convention inserts “Yahweh” directly into the text of Exodus 6:3 instead of JEHOVAH.

So the Question of the evening is: What is the Name of the Lord? When it is time to Pray, whose name do we call?
