To Tithe or Not to Tithe?

Home > Pastor's Blog > To Tithe or Not to Tithe?

On Wednesday Night, Jan 6th, we will be discussing “Tithing.” Recently, one of our members asked me about a Christian website that offers Biblical questions and answers. I went to the site and clicked on a few questions and most of their answers seemed to be doctrinally sound. I noticed that there were several questions about stewardship, giving, and tithing. I’ve copied and pasted a few of their quotes about tithing in the next paragraph.

“Tithing is an Old Testament concept. The tithe was a requirement of the Law in which the Israelites were to give 10 percent of the crops they grew and the livestock they raised to the tabernacle/temple… Tithing is “optional” for the simple reason that the command to tithe was part of the Mosaic Law, and Christians are not under Law…. The New Testament nowhere commands, or even recommends, that Christians submit to a legalistic tithe system. The New Testament nowhere designates a percentage of income a person should set aside, but only says gifts should be “in keeping with income” (1 Cor 16:2)…. The New Testament talks about the importance and benefits of giving. We are to give as we are able. Sometimes that means giving more than 10 percent; sometimes that may mean giving less. It all depends on the ability of the Christian and the needs of the church…. Believers in Christ are not commanded to give 10% of their income. Each and every Christian should diligently pray and seek God’s wisdom as to how much he or she should give (James 1:5).”
