Does America need an Exorcism?

Home > Pastor's Blog > Does America need an Exorcism?

On Wednesday Night, Jul 29th, we will discuss exorcism. I was recently reading a couple of news articles concerning a nation wide exorcism for Mexico that was conducted in May by Cardinal Juan Iniquez, Archbishop Emeritus of Guadalajara. The purpose of this exorcism was “to drive away the evil responsible for skyrocketing violence, abortion, and drugs.”  Closely associated with the violence of the drug cartels is the rising popularity of Santa Muerte (Saint Death) – the folk saint who supposedly brings protection and prosperity to those in various crime syndicates whose death toll has reached over 100,000 in the last 7-8 years. Images of Santa Muerte, “the Skeleton Saint”, are not only found in Mexico – they are also available for sale in flea markets and shops around Gainesville. The Vatican has condemned the worship of Santa Muerte as a satanic cult.

With all of this corruption, destruction, and death going on in Mexico, the church leaders of this predominantly Catholic nation decided to meet and perform an exorcism to rid Mexico of “the diabolical influences of the devil that have penetrated our culture.”

It would have been easy to read the articles about the savagery going on in Mexico and say “Wow, things are really bad down there” – until you read the line that says “100,000 Mexicans have died in the ongoing battles over access to the largest drug market on earth here in the U.S.”

If Mexico is considered a “demon possessed” nation because they are supplying drugs to the United States – What does that say about the United States?  The Question for the Evening:
