Redefining Marriage

Home > Pastor's Blog > Redefining Marriage

On Wednesday Night, April 1st , we will discuss the EXPANDING Definition of Marriage. Two weeks ago, I received several “forwards” from church members about an article in accessnorthga.com titled “Presbyterians approve gay marriage in church constitution.” The Associated Press said “the Presbyterian Church (USA) has expanded it’s definition of marriage to include ‘a commitment between two people’ recognizing gay marriage as Christian in the church constitution.”

This move by the Presbyterians is difficult to understand because they have changed their church constitution to make something “normal” that the Bible calls “abominable.”  From the earliest chapters in the Bible, (Genesis 13:13, 18:20, 19:5) homosexual acts were forbidden and punished by God with fire and brimstone. Later in Leviticus 18:22 & 20:13, homosexual acts were forbidden by law. The crime and punishment of Sodom & Gomorrah were referred to in Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Amos, and Zephaniah. When you get to the New Testament, Jesus referred to Sodom & Gomorrah in the Gospels. In Romans 1, Paul preaches against “men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful.” Peter refers to this as “ungodly” (2Pe 2:6) and Jude calls it “sexual immorality” and warns of “suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.”

But regardless of what the Bible says, this “redefinition of Marriage” was endorsed last year by the Presbyterian Church (USA) General Assembly and was approved by a majority of the denomination’s regional districts a few weeks ago. The AP article went on to say that the United Church of Christ, the Episcopal Church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and the United Methodist Church seem to be poised to follow the Presbyterian lead.

Our question for the evening:

Will the SBC also Redefine Marriage?

  • No (80%, 16 Votes)
  • Not Sure (20%, 4 Votes)
  • Yes (0%, 0 Votes)

Total Voters: 20
