Is America under the Shemitah Curse?

Home > Pastor's Blog > Is America under the Shemitah Curse?

On Wednesday Night, December 10, we will discuss the “Shemitah” (pronounced “shmee-tah”).  The Shemitah refers to God’s commandment to Israel to allow the land to rest in the 7th year.  Exodus 23:10 says “Six years you shall sow your land and gather in its produce, 11 but the seventh year you shall let it rest and lie fallow, that the poor of your people may eat; and what they leave, the beasts of the field may eat. In like manner you shall do with your vineyard and your olive grove.” In Deuteronomy 15, Israel is told that if they fail to observe the Shemitah that it will be a sin.  In Jeremiah 25 (& 2Chr 36:20-23), the Lord tells Israel that because of their failure to observe the Seventh Year for so many years that He will give the land rest for 70 years while the people of Israel are carried away into Babylonian Exile. In 586 BC (a Shemitah Year), King Nebuchadnezzar and the Babylonians destroyed the city of Jerusalem and took the people into captivity in Babylon for 70 years.

Recently, Messianic Rabbi Jonathan Cahn (who wrote the Best Selling Book “The Harbinger” about the parallels between the Isaiah 9 and the September 11th Attacks on America) has written another book – “The Mystery of The Shemitah” where he draws parallels between the Seventh Year and various American Recessions that mysteriously occur in September of Shemitah years – like 1931, 1938, 1945, 1973, 1980, 1987, 9/11/2001, and September 2008.  Currently, he says we are in a Shemitah year that will end in September 2015. Cahn is careful not to predict what will happen in 2015 – he says he is not date setting, instead he is calling America to Repent and Return to the Lord.

What do you think?  Are the Old Testament Sabbath Year laws still in effect for America today?
