“Set Your House in Order”

Home > Pastor's Blog > “Set Your House in Order”

On Wednesday Night,  November 5th , we will discuss a topic that no one wants to talk about – preparing for the End of Life –  Estate Planning.   The Bible and experience tells us that at some point our Life on this Earth will End.  In Isa 38:1, In those days Hezekiah was sick and near death. And Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, went to him and said to him, “Thus says the LORD: ‘Set your house in order, for you shall die and not live.’ ”

What does it mean to “Set your House in Order?”   The Bible says in Deu 6 that the most important part of  “Setting our House in Order”, is making sure that we pass our faith along to our “house” – our family – our children.  We also find examples in the Bible of the patriarchs “Blessing” their children. The Bible also speaks of elders passing saved resources along to their children to help them prosper in life. Examples :

Pro 13:22  A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children

2Co 12:14 For the children ought not to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children.

After dealing with the Elder Care issues with my mother and mother-n-law for the last 7 years,  I’ve discovered that “Setting ones House in Order” or estate planning is a lot more complicated under our current laws than it was in Biblical times.  Some of our Northlake members who are familiar with some of the things that Laura and I have encountered as caregivers for our mothers have asked me to share with the congregation so they can make plans before it is too late. Proverbs 22:3 “A prudent man foresees evil and hides himself, But the simple pass on and are punished.”
