Sharing your Faith with Liberals

Home > Pastor's Blog > Sharing your Faith with Liberals

On Wednesday Night, February 19th , we will have a discussion about “Sharing your Faith with Liberals.” This question dates back to the Holidays – when people go “over the river and through the woods to grandmothers house….” After the Turkey, casseroles, and figgy pudding, there must be some conversation among family and friends – and so once you’ve talked about weather, family updates, and sports – the conversation may turn to religion and politics – then the fun begins!

The conversation may begin with Conservative Christian family members making disparaging remarks about the State of the Union and how the liberals are destroying the country with abortion, immigration policy, same sex marriage, unionization, taxation, government spending, welfare programs, increase in immorality, the lack of prayer and Bible reading in school, etc. Then the Liberal family members begin to question the Christianity of the Conservative Christians.

It’s not unusual for Liberals to tell the Conservatives that Jesus was a Liberal. In the Gospels, Jesus said “Blessed are the Peacemakers” not the war mongers. If we spent as much money on providing good jobs for the poor as we do the military, we wouldn’t need welfare. Jesus did not gripe about taxes, he said “render to Caesar the things that are Caesars.” Jesus confronted the Pharisees about being too legalistic and worrying about rules instead of building relationships. Jesus would have welcomed poor immigrants instead of building bigger fences – Luk 14:13 when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind and you will be blessed… Concerning prayer in schools, the Liberals would say Mat 6:6 when you pray do not pray like the hypocrites who love to be seen of men, instead pray in your closet. When talking about abortion, adultery, homosexuality, etc – the liberals say that Jesus showed love to these people who had different lifestyles instead of oppressing them like the “conservatives” of His day. Jesus was about love and compassion, not about keeping rules and ancient traditions.

After a few minutes of this – the lovely family gathering looks more like the feud between “The Hatfields and McCoys.” Therefore, many families agree to disagree and make a rule that there will be NO conversations that involve religion or politics.

As Christians Conservatives, we know that the Liberalized view of Jesus does not tell the whole story. We also know that many Liberals do not believe the Bible is “truth without any mixture of error” and they also do not believe that Jesus is the “only way to heaven.” Therefore, we worry about their eternal souls. Is there a way to have a conversation with our Liberal family and friends without it turning into a huge family fuss? Please feel free to comment on how your family handles this.
