Self-Defense?

Home > Pastor's Blog > Self-Defense?

On Wednesday Night, Oct 9th, we will be discussing Self-Defense. Our subject is a continuation of the last two discussions concerning Christians being forced by government to tolerate and accommodate people whose morals and values are different than ours. We talked about compromise or giving in on our religious convictions to get along with others. We talked about not compromising and being willing to pay the price of persecution to stand up for what we believe.

Then the question was asked – Why do Christians always have to give in? Do Christians have a right to defend themselves?  Muslims don’t have any reservations about declaring “holy war” on people who violate their beliefs. Atheists and political activists don’t seem to mind using anything from lawsuits to violence to get their way. Why don’t Christians retaliate when we are attacked?

We are all familiar with the Sermon on the Mount preached by Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ : ” You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’  But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.  If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also.   And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.  Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away.  You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’  But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,  that you may be sons of your Father in heaven.”

We have read these Scriptures and apparently so has the government and all our political enemies – for it seems that they have no fear of legislating laws that they know will violate the conscience of Christians – but they do it anyway – because they know Christians will not retaliate.

This will be our question of the evening:
