Are Weddings Necessary?

Home > Pastor's Blog > Are Weddings Necessary?

On Wednesday Night, July 31st, we will be discussing WEDDINGS. The question was asked “Are Weddings Necessary?”  Obviously, the Bible teaches that Marriage is necessary. From the earliest chapters of Genesis, we see the first man and the first woman joined in marriage by the Lord Himself (Gen 2:22-24).  Also, the idea of men and women having sexual relationships without being married is forbidden – see the 10 Commandments (Exo 20:14). And in the New Testament, Hebrews 13: 4 [it says] “Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.”  So, the question is NOT “Is Marriage Necessary?.” Our question for the evening will be  “Are Weddings Necessary?”

There are very few references to weddings in the Bible. And there is no detailed description of a wedding ceremony. Is the idea of weddings Biblical or cultural?  According to CNN MONEY, the cost for the average American wedding in 2012 was $28,400 (not including the honeymoon)!  So, if there is not a strong Biblical basis for weddings and if a couple can be married without all the hoopla associated with modern American weddings, then why spend all that money?
