Turn the Other Cheek?

Home > Pastor's Blog > Turn the Other Cheek?

Our Wednesday Night topic for September 12th is Self-Defense.  Last Sunday night, we were studying the 6th Commandment, Exo 20:13 “Thou shalt not Kill.”  We found that there are several exceptions to the Commandment. One of those exceptions was that we are allowed to kill in self defense – defense of our lives, our loved ones, and our property (Exo 22:2).

After the study, someone asked about the teachings of Jesus concerning non-violence – non-resistance – of “turning the other cheek” (Mat 5:39). Is this a contradiction between the Old Testament and New Testament? What is a Christian to do?

Suppose there is an intruder kicking on your door in the middle of the night. You look thru the telescopic peep hole in your door and see that this man is armed and apparently committed to coming inside your home for less than benevolent purposes. What does the Law of God allow you to do?
