Is Mormonism a Cult?

Home > Pastor's Blog > Is Mormonism a Cult?

On Wednesday night, Oct 19th, we will be discussing Mormonism. Mormonism has been in the news recently because 2 Republican Presidential candidates-Mitt Romney & Jon Huntsman- are Mormons.

On Oct 7, Dr. Robert Jeffress, Pastor of First Baptist Church of Dallas, Texas, introduced Gov. Rick Perry at a Values Voters Summit in Washington DC.  Later, Jeffress told reporters that Mormonism was a “cult”. When a CNN reporter asked him to clarify what he meant by “cult”, Jeffress said “that’s not some fanatical comment. That’s been the historic position of evangelical Christianity. The Southern Baptist Convention, which is the largest Protestant denomination in the world, has officially labeled Mormonism as a cult. I think Mitt Romney’s a good, moral man, but I think those of us who are born-again followers of Christ should always prefer a competent Christian to a competent non-Christian like Mitt Romney.”

When Gov. Rick Perry was asked about Jeffress’ comments about Mormonism, he said “No, I do not hold that view.”  After CNN had questioned Dr. Jeffress, they noticed another Republican candidate, Herman Cain, nearby – and they asked him about Mormonism. Cain replied “no comment. Some people feel that way. You know, I respect – I respect everybody’s, you know, religious beliefs and Mormonism’s been around a long time. So no comment. Not going to get into that. I don’t think it’s appropriate to say, but he said it. OK? He said it, but I don’t want to get into that. I want to focus on growing the economy, creating jobs.”  Presidential Candidate and Mormon Jon Huntsman called Pastor Jeffress a “moron.”
